Why is ping-o-matic not working?

17 March 2012.  This is the first article in a series of experiments that I am carrying out to find how blogs are indexed so quickly on Google.  Last week I wrote about how I intended to measure what makes a blog get indexed so fast and how I intend to measure these results over the coming weeks.  If we can understand how this works it will be a major help to increase our rankings on Google by applying the same principes that help our blog get indexed so fast and rank so highly on the rest of our website.  You can read the previous blog here

The first problem that I have noticed is that our blog has not been indexed by Google and therefore ping-o-matic is not working.  I deliberately didn’t put a link to the blog on Barrowvale.ie because I wanted to test the theory that the built in ping-o-matic service will let many other services know when we’ve updated updated our blog. However this has not happened.  The reason why ping-o-matic is not working is because of the privacy settings.  To change these in WordPress we have to go to Settings>>General.  If your privacy settings have been set not to let Search Engines index your blog you will see a sentence at the bottom of this page that says:-  “WordPress is not notifying any Update Services because of your site’s privacy settings.” as shown in the screenshot below:-wordpress-options-writingNow click on privacy settings to get to this page below:-

wordpress-options-privacyJust click on the box that says, “” and ping-o-matic will start working and the search engines will begin to crawl your site.

As stated in the previous blog post my next steps will be as follows:-

a) test ping-o-matic, measure and record results

b) put a link on Barrowvale.ie to the blog, measure and record results

c) Set up the sitemap, measure and record results

d) set up blogs under different names such as ‘News’ or ‘Events’ or ‘Cool Stuff’, measure and record results

That’s all for this week,  if you are interested to see the results please feel free to bookmark or subscribe to the blog or to add your comments below.
